Brilliant tour tho a bit basic, but that was part of the adventure. I loved it and certainly gave me a lot to ponder about the local indigenous culture. Rachel our guide was fantastic and tho sympathetic to cultural needs was also sympathetic to ours. I learnt a lot and had a lot of fun. I totally recommend this tour.
My two daughters & I and 9 female friends just returned from the Women's tour and had an amazing und unforgettable experience. The Lirriwi guides Rachel & Howard were amazing and we fell in love with Timmy, Rita, Djawundil and the children in Bawaka. We deeply thank them for inviting us to their homeland and to teach us about their culture, art and way of life! It was an experience unlike any other and we are very grateful for it!
My Mum and I went on the women's tour together in a group of 11 women. We both agree it was deeply special experience and highly recommend this trip if you're ready with a curious mind and open heart. Thank you to the family at Barwaka to opening their home and hearts to us all on the tour. It was a wonderful mix of learning, listening, reflecting, connecting and committing to nurturing the seed of reconciliation. Timmy, Wopurruwuy and their family showed us so many activities - basket weaving, net fishing for our dinner, foraging for mud crab and mud mussels, swimming, sand 4WDing, traditional dancing. We had bush class on the moiety system, spoken and sign language, and women's business. The tour concluded with a healing ceremony which was moving for everyone. Our tour guide Rachel was excellent! Hard working, experienced, attentive and knowledgeable. We always had abundance of food and snacks, Rachel was always one step ahead preparing things, she went above and beyond to ensure everyone was happy and comfortable. The accommodation is simple but this is perfect for the trip; to pare back and focus on the experience. Thanks again to all involved. Kate and Heather
We had the privilege of visiting a Yolngu homeland with Lirrwi. After a few hours drive we were warmly welcome by the homeland community. The location as breathtaking and we relaxed immediately. Over the next few days we took part in the community's daily activities - language, beach combing, crafting, sharing stories. The food was plentiful and facilities a very good standard for a remote area. Highly recommended if you want to learn about Yolngu culture and to relax into the Yolngu rhythm.
Spending a few days with the Yonglu people of Nyinyikay was just a privilege. This wasn't just an exercise in learning about the culture, each day was an immersive classroom dedicated to helping us understand indigenous lineage, law and land. We all came away feeling that we were not just tourists, but students wanting to go back home and share what we've learnt. Amazing bucket-list experience!
I have been fascinated and deeply respectful of Aboriginal culture since I was a child- in New Zealand. I achieved a long- time dream to spend time with Aboriginal people in their Country and homeland and to learn from them ( rather than books) about their culture. I didnt have definite expectations, but the whole booking process was so efficient, I had a bit of a niggle that this might be one of those very polished/packed/ superficial "cultural experiences". Quite the opposite- it was totally authentic. The programme evolved in response to what we wanted to learn. with a lot of hard work and preparation going on in the background. Over the 3.5 days we came to love unforgettable characters like Ruth, Bernadette, Susan, Kenny, Kevin and Damien who generously shared their knowledge and skills with us. The landscape was stunning, facilities basic but perfectly adequate and we were very well fed. One note: this was a women only tour in that the 7 of us on the tour were women ( and amazing women), but our "teachers" were not only women and in certain areas of knowledge, like explaining kinship structures, the men were "in charge". None of us thought this was an issue, but I think this should be made clear in the information about the tour so there are no misunderstandings. Highly recommended for a very genuine experience.
I loved the 3.5 days spent with Ruth, Bernadette, Kenny and families at Bukudal. With just 7 of us in our group it really was a cultural immersion. This is not your average tour, it is a genuine experience of learning Yolgnu language and culture in a beautiful remote location. We had excellent teachers and guides who kept us safe at all times. There was a great mix of quiet time just sitting and enjoying the serenity as well as activities to participate in and enjoy. The women worked hard before we arrived collecting shells and nuts and preparing them for us to our make our own necklaces and paint shells using a paint brush made of hair. We watched manta rays playing, we collected and learnt about bush medicines and saw crocodile tracks up a secluded beach. The final evening we were treated to a performance of yidaki and dance around the camp fire which everyone loved. The Lirrwi guides looked after us very well and the meals were great. I'm now home and enjoying the beautiful pandanus mat I bought at the amazing art centre in Yirrkala. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a genuine cultural immersion.
An amazing insight into Yolngu life in a beautiful beachside setting on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The family at Bukadul were so welcoming and generous in sharing their culture. I've travelled widely and lived in other countries and can honestly say that this tour is great fun and totally unique. There was nothing staged - just wonderful, genuine people opening their home and giving us the opportunity to learn about their life and culture.
